Piecing together the '10-'11 schedule

Postby winthropeaglefan » Tue Jul 06, 2010 4:35 pm

It isn't much, but I'm trying to piece together this year's schedule...I'll update this post whenever I get new information on opponents or dates of games. Please reply to this if you see anything wrong or if you find out anything new....

Home games:
CSU - TBA
CCU - TBA
GWU - TBA
HPU - TBA
LU - TBA
PC - TBA
RU - TBA
UNCA - TBA
VMI - TBA
Eastern Kentucky - TBA (return game from last year's Bracket Buster)
Bracket Buster - TBA (I'm assuming that WU is participating again this year, and if they are, I'd assume it would be a home game this year)

Road Games:
@ CSU - TBA
@ CCU - TBA
@ GWU - TBA
@ HPU - TBA
@ LU - TBA
@ PC - TBA
@ RU - TBA
@ UNCA - TBA
@ VMI - TBA
@ Kentucky - Dec. 22
@ Charlotte - TBA (last game of 2-for-1 series)

NIT Season Tip-Off:
vs. VCU - Nov. 15 (in Winston-Salem, NC)
vs. Wake Forest OR Hampton - Nov. 16 (in Winston-Salem, NC)

IF WU LOSES AT LEAST ONE GAME IN WINSTON-SALEM...
NIT Consolation Game #1 - Nov. 22 (location TBA)
NIT Consolation Game #2 - Nov. 23 (location TBA)

IF WU WINS BOTH GAMES IN WINSTON-SALEM...
NIT Semifinal Game - Nov. 24 (in New York, NY)
NIT Championship or 3rd Place Game - Nov. 26 (in New York, NY)

(Possible opponents in NIT Consolation/Semi/Championship games are UCLA, Nevada, Pacific, Pepperdine, Villanova, George Washington, Boston U, Marist, Tennessee, Missouri State, Belmont, and Arkansas State)

If all of the above games are correct, then there are still 5 open spots on the schedule.

This is NOT confirmed but is the last tentative schedule I have seen. There are still contracts out so don't make plans yet but it gives you a good overview of the season. To the uneducated eye, it looks like a decent schedule. NIT and bracketbuster will provide good compitition, just two non-D1's, good games with JU, UNCC, Dayton, and UK. The same messed up conference schedule we play VMI and LU in Dec and not again until Feb but play Radford twice in two weeks. At least we get a beach trip. So with very little ado...
Nov 13, Queens (H)
Nov. 15-17, NIT (W-S)
Nov. 27, Lander (H)
Dec. 2, VMI (A)
Dec. 4, Liberty (A)
Dec. 7, Charlotte (A)
Dec. 12, Jacksonville (H)
Dec. 20, Dayton (A)
Dec. 22, Kentucky (A)
Dec. 31, Presby (H)
Jan. 6, Asheville (H)
Jan. 8, GWU (H)
Jan. 13, Coastal (A)
Jan. 15, CSU (A)
Jan. 20, Radford (H)
Jan. 22, HPU (H)
Jan. 29, Presby (A)
Feb. 1, Radford (A)
Feb. 3, GWU (A)
Feb. 5, Asheville (A)
Feb. 10, CSU (H)
Feb. 12, Coastal (H)
Feb. 15, HPU (A)
Feb. 19, BracketBuster (H)
Feb. 24, Liberty (H)
Feb. 26, VMI (H)

I guess I hadn't realized yet how much adding teams into the conference would hurt our strength of schedule. Only 4 OOC single games (we do get the BB and NIT). It's going to be tough no matter how good we are in the future to get a decent RPI or numerous quality wins with so many teams in the conference taking up so many games.

Can't complain about the OOC schedule---just that there are not enough of them.

Also like that we frontloaded the D2 games---that will eat up Robbie's suspension before conference games will it not?

When would Chuck theoretically come back?

Thanks for the info Eagle Eye. Looks like once you add an Eastern Kentucky home game...there's still one spot open...I'd guess for a $$$ road game.

So how about that stretch from Jan 29-Feb 5? 4 road conference games in 8 days.

Once you add Eastern Kentucky to the mix, that's 14 home games. That's higher than most years I can remember.

If this schedule holds up, I like the mix of non-conference opponents (I'd still prefer only 1, if any, non-D1 games)...

Yeah, Robbie would be out for Queens, the two NIT games in Winston-Salem, and then either the next NIT game or possibly Eastern Kentucky (if that game is wedged in on Saturday, Nov.20...which seems like a logical day to play that game if it is open for EKU).

Chuck would be able to come back sometime around Dec 14 (last exam day) or a couple of days later...so he'd theoretically be available starting on the Dayton/UK trip.

Looks like a decent schedule. I'm glad to see that our 2 non-DI games are against another SC school & Queens. I'm also pretty excited to see the Jacksonville game at home.

I noticed that our home game against Presbyterian is tentatively scheduled for New Year's Eve. I know that this has been addressed in another post, but I wonder if the athletic department will have any New Year's festivities after the game?

Depends on the start time. If its an afternoon game, there probably would be very little other than your basic Happy New year, be safe. If its a night game there could be something if a decent crowd was expected.

My true feeling is that this will be an afternoon game ( 2 or 4 p.m.). I just think people will want to go home and get ready for thier evening plans but that is just my opinion. What are your thoughts?

I just wish we could always look forward to a decent out of conference home game every year. Don't even try to act like Jacksonville and the Bracket Buster team are decent opponents either. I liked the Charlotte game last year, and the Davidson game before that. I know how hard it is to get good teams to come to the Coliseum, but I would just like to see other solid mid-majors come through every now and then. At least one every year. I attribute a large portion of the blame for lack of fan support on the home schedule. If you don't believe that the away team is an attraction, look at attendance for the Bobcats and other small market NBA teams when Kobe or Lebron comes to town. The same holds true when storied college programs travel to different arenas around the country.

Personally, I find the prospect of an evening game on New Year's Eve very intriguing. Would there be a big turnout? Maybe not, but I know that I would be there, & so would a lot of people on this board. I realize that any post-game festivities (fireworks, refreshments, etc.) can get expensive, but if the event was properly advertised & promoted well enough in advance, I wouldn't underestimate the potential crowd.

I would consider ODU a good mid major and we hosted them a couple years ago.

The main reason we don't play upper mid majors/majors at home is A) they are scared to play at our place due to our rep and record at home over the last decade and B) we can't pay anyone to come play.

Decent schedule. We have some good road games OOC. I really wish Robbie and Chuck weren't suspended, because I think we can make a little noise in the NIT, but will he short-handed without them...

Only complaints:
-Weak, weak, weak home OOC schedule.
- Homecoming will be against Queens... whoop-dee-doo

Hopefully, with one more open date at home we can pencil in a home-and-home with a decent mid major. Maybe keep the CofC series going? Or start a home-and-home with some CAA, A-10 or other competitive mid-major team.

I think the home schedule is probably booked once you add Eastern Kentucky to Jacksonville, Queens, Lander, and the Bracket Buster. Depending on the BB opponent, it isn't an amazing home slate, but it's definitely far from the worst either (remember when it was just 4 non-D1 teams back in 06-07). Not sure if there is much income involved with playing in the NIT, but unless it's a big payday, i'd think we'd see another road game against a 'name' opponent that can payout a little money (since Kentucky seems to be the only one so far that fits that bill on the schedule already...unless Dayton is paying out...or is that a home-and-home or 2-for-1 deal?).

I do like how many weekend home games there are...but being an out-of-town fan, I'm partial to those.

I guess I was considering the NIT a money maker. If its not (i don't know), then I guess we need to schedule another money game. Would like to see us play UGA or GaTech, since we seem to like recruiting that state...

Yep. I certainly understand the reasoning, but it doesn't stop me from hoping every year when the schedule comes out.

Agree with everyone else too, I think we'll get another money game.

Sadly, while a home-and-home deal with a CAA, A-10, or C-USA school would be great, I think the best that we could do would be a 2-for-1 deal like with Charlotte.

I like the schedule; it seems balanced and gives the team a few games to nail down the rotation before jumping feet first into the NIT. Overall, Peele did a good job making the schedule for the team; challenging, but not too easy or too difficult. Hopefully, we can build confidence and get back to our winning ways.

The 201-11 schedule has been posted. Without verifying the date and location of each game, everything looks the same as the schedule posted earlier, with the exception of 2 games:

11/6 vs. UNC Pembroke
11/20 vs. The Citadel

Thanks for finding that Booey_WU.

That UNC Pembroke game would have to be an exhibition (since it is a week before official games can start)...so there is still one opening somewhere, and the EKU return game isn't listed anywhere. So if the empty spot in the schedule is going to be a home game against Eastern Kentucky (which I think is required to happen per Bracket Buster rules), then WU will have 15 regular season home games, which is the most I can ever remember (at least lately), along with a home exhibition game...good for the hometown fans.

I'm going to assume the last game to be added will be against Eastern Kentucky (maybe they are trying to find a date that works for both teams)...so if the schedule that is posted on the WU website holds up, here is the final rundown on non-conference opponents (with their RPIs from last season):

-Queens (non-D1)
-NIT game vs. VCU (46)
-NIT game @ Wake Forest (32) OR vs. Hampton (285)
-The Citadel (195)
-2 NIT games vs. this pool of teams: UCLA (138), Nevada (59), Pacific (99), Pepperdine (306), Villanova (16), George Washington (149), Boston U. (119), Marist (334), Tennessee (10), Missouri State (77), Belmont (144), Arkansas State (200)
-Lander (non-D1)
-@ Charlotte (79)
-Jacksonville (129)
-@ Dayton (35)
-@ Kentucky (3)
-Bracket Buster (TBA)
-Eastern Kentucky?? (164)

I, for one, am happy about getting an exhibition game. I think that it can be great for working out a lot of the early season kinks that almost cost us the Limestone game last season. Randy said that he wanted to schedule one for this season, so kudos to him for doing it.

This is odd...The Citadel game scheduled for 11/20 is now listed as 'TBA'. I'm not sure if they're trying to schedule the Eastern Kentucky game for then, or maybe some schedule conflict arose with the Citadel. Neither EKU or the Citadel have their new schedules posted.

I wonder if eku is backing out, I would assume there would be a price to pay or they would compensate us in some way.
