Time to tie up a few loose ends

There were a few ongoing topics on the old board that have had some news over the last few weeks....

We had a post that tracked transfers around the league. I hadn't found any new ones, but there was one major assistant coach departure. Ali Ton at RU has left the Highlanders to take a job at UC-Irvine. He has major connections overseas and played a major role in getting all of those foreign guys to Radford. That will definitely change the recruiting scene at RU.

Speaking of transfers, I haven't seen anything more official on it, but Jeff Goodman's transfer list on foxsports is showing that Chris Malcolm is transferring to Rollins College (a good D-II program not far from where he's from in central Florida).

Torrey Craig from Great Falls was a topic of discussion for a while. There was some word that he had verbally committed to CSU, but he ended up signing with USC-Upstate last week. I'm not sure how interested WU was with him (or him with WU).

Nothing but best wishes to Chris Malcom. I bet he has the chance to really shine with his size/athleticism in a smaller school.

Glad Malcolm was able to land at a good program. Hope he has a good career down there.

Glad to know that Chris can keep playing. Best of luck to him.

Ali Ton leaving RU is just another blow to them. The guy's an amazing recruiter, & he was responsible for getting Art & Lazar to transfer to Radford.

As for Torrey Craig, I'm pretty sure that he must have had academic and/or disciplinary issues. I can't really see us bypassing him for Jerome unless there were problems there. Plus, I'm hearing that Upstate is now the school to get into if you can't get into anywhere else. I imagine their recruiting standards aren't top-notch either.

Malcolm had his struggles but I always thought he was going hard whenever he was in there and that's all you can ask for. Hope he succeeds at his new school.

I think Craig had numerous character and academic issues, which is why we never had interest.

As I've said before, I'm happy that we do have the high standards that we have. I don't want to sell out my university for a few more wins, & I'm sure most of you feel the same way.

One more thing I have been curious about; hate to bring it back up, but is there any new news on the players in the apartment during the drug incident? I know none of them violated the law, but just wanted to know if we have heard anything.

Yes, I am also curious to know if there will be any punishment given to the players present for their attitude & refusal to cooperate.

Well I hope there is no punishment for not cooperating with police or ratting out a teammate. I don't find fault with how those guys handled it in that aspect. Everyone knows you don't incriminate yourself and don't speak to the police, not too mention staying unified as a team and not selling out your friend.

Now if punishment is metered out for being stupid and smoking pot on campus where it is obvious you are doing it and can get caught---then punish away for being idiots.

I tend to agree with shakes. Punishment for being around pot? fine. But don't punish them because they didn't cooperate with cops. Look, I'm nt advocating obstructing justice, but if a cop is looking for a reason to lock me or a buddy up, I'm not going to help him one bit. He gets paid to investigate and do it by the book with warants, probable cause, etc. Let him do it without my help.

I am stunned that someone (mainly Chad or Charles) didn't take a trip to the pokey. Winthrop cops are apparently very lenient, because most cops would have locked Chad up for trying to get rid of it & locked Charles up for interfering with a police investigation. Instead, however, they stroked Chad a ticket & opted to refer the others present to whatever committee or board that they did.

The players got off lightly, but it's still important for them to learn from this before they do something else & aren't so lucky.

Obviously none of us were there, but what exactly did Chuck do supposedly? Just sounded like he said he wasn't talking to the police and told everyone else that they shouldn't either----I'm pretty sure that within his right but I'm not a cop nor an attorney.

I definitely wouldn't have said a word.

Actually, since it was a legal search (someone smelled pot, called the cops, & the cops smelled pot & had probable cause to be there & search for it), everyone present could have technically been held accountable for it. Everyone there could have gone to jail, which definitely would have resulted in some harsh punishment handed down from athletics. The cops, however, chose not to do that to the players.

All of this is under the bridge now. Yes, I realize there are far more serious crimes, & no, I'm not saying anyone should be kicked off of the team or even suspended for 'x' games or halves. I just want all of our guys, even the ones that were not involved in this mess, to realize that they must hold themselves to a higher standard because they represent Winthrop & because they're under constant scrutiny.

I meant to mention in the original post that Manny, Andy, and Ray Davis all graduated last weekend...

Good luck to Chris, hope he does well at his new school.

Can't say I'm sad to see Ali Ton leave RU (and the Big South altogether). He can recruit some good overseas talent and will probably have his own program in a couple of years.

Finally, congrats to Manny, Andy, and Ray on graduating. Good luck to them in their post-WU endeavors.

This is one of the best selling points for our program, most of our players leave with a degree; also known as a backup plan to basketball.

Yes, congratulations to Manny, Andy, & Ray. That what being a student-athlete is all about.

I hate to bring it up in this thread, but did Chad not graduate?

I didn't see his name in the list of graduates...but that doesn't mean he won't be finishing up in the summer/fall/next spring...I don't know either way, but considering he transferred in from another school, it doesn't surprise me that he may not have finished in 4 years (on that note, I'm very impressed that Ray Davis did...I think he went to two different Junior Colleges before coming to WU...that can't be easy to finish that quickly while attending different schools like that).

This may have been answered earlier and I just missed it or don't remember it, but did George get his medical redshirt for last season?

Or Mike Holmes?

I'd be really surprised if George didn't get it.

I've heard that if's official - George got the redshirt. No real surprise to anyone probably, but it's at least good to know.

Not sure if this got lost in the shuffle, but Michael Wooten is also transferring out of Radford.

I believe that he redshirted last season, but it's another loss for them at guard. According to his bio, he averaged more than 20 points as a junior, was a two-time all-state player, & was named to the all-region team as a senior.

This didn't seem to get much press, but Mike Holmes of Coastal Carolina (formerly of South Carolina) was denied a medical redshirt, so after sitting out the fall semester, he'll be a senior, playing out his final season of college ball. So Coastal will get about 20 games out of him...
